Veg Bar in Brixton is an independent restaurant and bar, serving a variety of vegan meals. The food is mostly ‘vegan alternative’ style foods such as ‘Tofish and Chips’ and the ‘Mozfather’ Burger. The Manager and Chef both work on the restaurant floor and the chef works in an open kitchen. The bar as a cool vibe and even has a club downstairs which hosts live music on weekends. The menu is here (they are updating this at the moment!)

The Veg Bar has a very different feel to other vegan restaurants, it feels like somewhere anyone could go to hang out and the food is so good, barely distinguishable from non vegan food, they really hit the nail on the head taking classic english ‘pub food’ and turning it vegan. Veg Bar accepts tastes cards and is on Deliveroo so it’s the perfect restaurant for the recent vegan convert who is missing those home comforts. The menu is also easy to personalise, you can add and remove things very easily as you can talk directly to the chef preparing your food when giving your order which is great.

We went for the Tempura Flower to start and the Burger and Falafel Salad for main (half and half each). My dinner guest isn’t vegan but has recently started to lower her dairy intake so the fact batter, cheese and mayo was all completely dairy free was a box ticked for her. The food is delicious (the burger tastes, in a good way, quite mcdonalds-y). The chef makes the majority of things himself, including his own mayonnaise. My only concern is that it isn’t classically ‘healthy’ vegan food, burgers with huge portions of chips and battered foods aren’t good for you, so it’s a great place to go for a treat but not somewhere to go if you’re focusing on eating whole foods only.

It is fantastic for dairy and gluten intolerent people, however I think if you’re low carb you will struggle. There are salads, however they aren’t terribly exciting if made low carb.

The Good

  • The staff are great, really passionate
  • The food is delicious, you can barely tell its vegan
  • It makes veganism cool

The Bad

  • The majority of the food isn’t healthy, it is definitely like eating at a vegan pub
  • It’s quite hard to find, near Brockwell park it isn’t near a tube station and requires a bit of effort to find it

We loved the Veg Bar so much we plan to go back within the week. The bar is hugely growing, renovating the entire space, building a juice bar next door and doing up the club downstairs – it’s really a force to be reckoned with. The Manager, Annabelle is absolutely lovely, very personable and enthusiastic and the chef even serves you the food yourself. They have a wonderful attitude for personalisation of meals, it is very simple to turn a meal gluten free or to add/remove things depending on preference  – but as an all vegan restaurant you can be safe you’re never going to risk consuming anything you don’t want.

A huge Food of Me approved high five from us!
